Meet Our New Team Member: Rob Johnson

By Rob Johnson

One of our core values here at Elevate Wealth Management is to continue improving and growing through learning and trying new things. With that goal in mind, we are excited to announce that our firm is growing by adding a new financial advisor to our team! Rob is a Wyoming native who returned home to put down some roots with his family. He is excited to serve the people of Sheridan and surrounding areas by helping them reach their financial goals. Here’s his story in his own words:

Finding My Way

As a 17-year-old kid with no idea where I wanted my life to take me, the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” always elicited the same response: “I have no clue.” At that age, all I knew was that I wanted to continue playing basketball. As a 6’6” lefty, I’d found success on the court and developed a passion for competition. When my high school career was nearing an end, I knew I wasn’t ready to give it up. So, when I received an offer to continue playing ball at Black Hills State University, I don’t remember even looking at the academic programs they offered before signing my letter of intent. They were going to let me keep playing ball, and that was good enough for me.

At some point, I had to declare a major, but nothing stood out as very interesting or fulfilling. I knew the school had a great business program, and this sounded generic enough for me to figure out my path as I went along. During my degree program, I was required to take classes in micro and macroeconomics, investments, and financial principles. Through this coursework, I discovered I had a passion for economics and finance, and I quickly added the “economics and finance” designation to my business degree. I finally felt like I was moving in the direction I was meant to go.

Getting Started

When college ended, I was thrust into the real world, finding a job as a business accountant for a major construction company. I was thrilled just to have a job, so I packed up my belongings and moved to Houston, TX. Much of the work I did at this job involved completing project analysis and performing cost accounting for major projects. I developed skills that I’ll carry with me forever, and it reinforced my love for numbers. But it also taught me something about myself: I was much more of a people person than I realized. There were days when I spent all my time in a cubicle working on a computer with minimal human interaction. While I enjoyed the work, I knew I couldn’t do it forever and that I needed to be working with people.

When I met my wife and we decided to move back to our hometown of Sheridan, WY, I took a job in sales. I had spent a couple of years working with numbers, so I figured a job in sales would fulfill the other half of my professional desire—working with people. I took great pride in helping people solve problems and finding solutions to meet their needs, while developing a passion for providing customer service and working directly with people. I worked for this company in various positions over the next eight years (and truly enjoyed what I did), but in the back of my mind, I knew it wasn’t where I was meant to be.

Coming Full Circle

These experiences prompted me to ask myself, “What career path will fulfill my passion for the finance world and for helping others?” The obvious answer to this question led me to where I am today, and is why I became a financial advisor.

This career allows me the opportunity to do what I love and what I’m passionate about. I want to work with people and help them pursue their goals, and I want to continue learning and working in an environment that provides new challenges and opportunities.

Why I Love What I Do

I’m passionate about helping others realize their dreams and enjoy working directly with people and learning what makes them tick. I also love solving puzzles. Every person’s financial situation is a unique puzzle, which makes coming to work every day and helping clients very fulfilling. I am enthusiastic about diving into the details of a problem and finding the best possible solution. I enjoy thinking outside of the box and being a resource for people. If I don’t immediately have the answer, I’ll find it.

I truly couldn’t be more grateful to get to do what I do. I’m finally in the right seat on the bus. While it took me a few stops along the way to get here, I know I am where I’m supposed to be.

Let’s Connect!

So, that’s my story; now I would love to meet with you and hear yours. As you can tell, I’m a people person and love connecting with others, listening to their problems, and helping them find a solution.
